Cardiff Blues Threaten To Leave Arms Park

Cardiff Blues have expressed their exasperation with being unable to come to a renewed lease agreement on Cardiff Arms Park that they have announced they will be looking for alternative home grounds from 2022 onwards.

A club statement on Monday said: “Following a meeting of the Cardiff Blues board today, the decision was made to redouble efforts to secure a long-term home with a 'fit for purpose' stadium and therefore the company will now explore alternative options away from Cardiff Arms Park.

The Blues claim that they have been in negotiations for 10 years with Cardiff Athletic Club (CAC), their landlords at Cardiff Arms Park, to renew a lease which expires in four years.

The board have concluded that they must “future proof Cardiff Blues by exploring alternative options away from Cardiff Arms Park”.

Wales Online have reported that the Blues had an offer of £8m for a 150-year lease rejected by CAC. The Welsh region currently pay £120k per year on a lease that expires in 2022.

The Blues think they have a number of potential city centre locations lined up: last October Cardiff Council identified six possible sites for a new 15,000-capacity multi-purpose arena. The idea was to build a venue that would attract international sporting events to the city, such as ATP tennis, boxing or basketball games.

The six sites identified actually included the Arms Park, with the others being Dumballs Road, Cardiff Prison, Red Dragon Centre, County Hall and Callaghan Square.
