Car Park First, Then Hotel For Welford Road

Local press report that Leicester Tigers will begin work on a £22 million hotel project adjacent to their Welford Rd ground once they have completed building the £5 million mutli-storey car park to the south of the stadium next autumn. The Leicester Mercury also revealed in an interview with chief executive Simon Cohen that the Crumbie Stand on the south side of the stadium is unlikely to be redeveloped any time soon.

The car park will provide 450 spaces for fans on match days and for commuters and other users at other times.

The club wants to build a five-storey 165-room hotel on the 1.7 acre Granby Halls site, along with parking for hotel guests and enhanced conference, corporate and supporter facilities available to the club.

Tigers want the development to be completed in time for the 2019/20 season and Cohen hopes to strike a deal with a partner for the hotel by next month.

He said: “Most of the preparations for the car park are in place, so we hope to start building in the not-too-distant future.

“We hope that once that is up we can start on what is currently the Granby Halls site, with a 52 week build.”

Mr Cohen said he would also love to have two or three relaxed, premium type lounges at the stadium to provide matchday hospitality.

There are already two in the new Robin Hood stand and the Mattioli Woods stand.
