Wasps, Coventry City FC and Coventry City Council have been ordered to take part in mediation over the long-running Ricoh Arena legal battle the Coventry Telegraph has reported.

A Court of Appeal judge instructed the parties to take part in peace talks during a hearing at the Royal Courts of Justice building, in London on Tuesday (28th).

The hearing was held as Coventry City Council and CCFC are in conflict over the December 2014 sale of the Ricoh Arena to Wasps.

Lawyers for companies that make up the club argue the extension of the stadium lease to 250 years means the £21m deal was actually undervalued by about £29million.

At the hearing, Judge Irwin warned that there were “reputational consequences” to consider “for all parties”.

It also emerged that the football club was no longer seeking damages from Wasps through this process for completing a deal that, the club’s lawyers argue, was never offered to them and squeezed them out.

However, Rhodri Thompson, the club’s QC told the court his client could seek damages through a civil claim in the future.

If mediation fails, the parties are destined for a full appeal hearing in May 2018.

That could result in a full judicial review, to analyse the legal arguments around the sale of the stadium to Wasps, in late 2018.

It’s possible either side could appeal the result of that – which would likely take the dispute into 2019.
