Welsh rugby is likely to see the merger of PRO14 sides Scarlets and Ospreys and the addition of a North Wales region as early as next season after strategic discussions between the WRU and stakeholders this week.

The future of Ospreys, the Swansea-based region may have already been decided with increasingly tighter financial circumstances and not owning their home ground, the Liberty Stadium.

It has been widely reported that the Professional Rugby Board has already requested the Ospreys and Scarlets consider a merger and that staff of the two regions have been consulted.

Wales Online has reported that Monday night saw a meeting between representatives from a joint supporters group of the four regions and the WRU - with the supporters group posting a statement on their Twitter account afterwards:

"As the Joint Supporters Group we have met tonight with Martyn Phillips and Ryan Jones from the WRU/PRB. We have had an open and frank discussion about Project Reset and have been informed that there is a critical meeting tomorrow. We will make a further joint statement after the outcome of that is known.

"Rest assured that we have asked all of your questions and expressed our collective disappointment at the lack of communication during this process with supporters."
