Exeter Realise Growth From Winning Season

Recently-filed accounts for Exeter Rugby Group plc show turnover grew to £17.4m in the year ending 30 June 2017, up from £17m in 2015/16. Profit before tax was £1.14m, down slightly from £1.24m the year before.

Exeter Rugby Group plc is responsible for the rugby club, as well as the conferencing and banqueting facilities at Sandy Park Stadium.

In 2016/17 the Chiefs won the English Premiership for the first time in their history, defeating Wasps 23-20 in the final. They are currently top of the Premiership.

Chief executive Tony Rowe told South West Business Insider the success on the pitch had contributed to the growth in turnover.

"Our growth numbers are pretty strong," he said. "Capacity last year was about 12,800 and we were averaging attendances of more than 11,000. The people who come to support us want to see good quality rugby.

"Season ticket sales this year are up 15 per cent and average attendances are up about 5 per cent, even though there is not much more capacity."

He said the club are now working towards the redevelopment of the south end of Sandy Park as part of a long term plan to improve facilities and increase capacity.

Earlier this year, planning consent was granted for a £25m, 250-bed hotel at the club's Sandy Park ground. The development is part of a wider programme of work to expand the capacity of the stadium and add new facilities.
